Charter night for the Rotary Club of Lancaster South was held on June 20, 1987 with 35 members inducted. Today Club members meet at 7:15 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday morning of every month at Oak Leaf Manor South, 2101 Wabank Road (off Rt 741) in Millersville, PA. Breakfast, fellowship and speakers on relevant topics highlight each meeting. Community involvement has been, and is, the key to the Club’s success.
A community project begun in 1989 that continues today is the West Lampeter Fair held the last Wednesday through Friday each September. The Club has built a reputation of selling funnel cakes and fried Oreo cookies at the Fair. Funds made at the Fair go to support the Fair and the Club’s philanthropic activities. Since 1994, the Club has used a portion of the funds to provide college scholarship for students at Lampeter Strasburg, Penn Manor and Solanco High Schools. The club also presents Student of the Month awards to students at these same three school districts from September through May each year.
In April 2000, the Club expanded its fundraising efforts by holding the first annual evening of comedy and magic which featured both national and international performers. The event benefitted the Club’s scholarship funds and supported other worthy causes through 2019. Another fund raiser is the silent auction at the Club’s annual holiday dinner, where proceeds from the auction support worthy causes in the geographic areas of Willow Street, Strasburg, Quarryville and Millersville.
Each year Club members are encouraged to support the Rotary International Foundation, which provides funds for projects around the world that focus on fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitization and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies, protecting the environment, and promoting peace.
The Rotary Club of Lancaster South is one of more than 35,000 Rotary Club’s scattered throughout the world. Clubs are committed to “provide service to other, promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. Rotary’s vision is to “see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.”
